History Trunk Request FormThe Lane County Hands-On History Traveling Trunk program is administered by the Lane County Historical Museum inpartnership with the Willamalane Park and Recreation District/Dorris Ranch and the Lane Education Service District and the Shelton McMurphey Johnson House.
The mission of this project is to encourage students to make personal connections to history through real objects, literature, and other multi-disciplinary ways. Each trunk contains authentic and replicated items, as well as maps, illustrations and photos, all of which teachers and students are encouraged to handle.
The trunk themes are:
Westward Migration
Civil War
Shelton McMurphey Johnson House*
Fur Trading and Hudson Bay Company*
America, a World Power
An accompanying preview guide and bibliography are available for each trunk. The trunks may be checked out for one week from September through October and mid March through June. The trunks marked with a * are only available from mid March through June.
The trunks are large
(33" x 23" x 15") and weigh approximately 55 pounds. A vehicle with a large trunk or compartment will be necessary for transport. Two people should be used to load and unload trunk from a vehicle, it can be wheeled by one person like airport luggage.

- There’s plenty of free parking in the lot east of the Museum at the corner of 13th and Jefferson. Walk through the gates to enter the Fairgrounds. Walk past the white Clerk’s Building on your right and turn right for the Museum entrance.

- The Main Exhibition Hall and Museum Store are accessible.
- Shopping & Food
- Shop at our Museum Store, open during regular hours. Members always receive a discount! There are many restaurants in nearby downtown Eugene. No food or drink is allowed in the Museum.
