History Trunk Request FormThe Lane County Hands-On History Traveling Trunk program is administered by the Lane County Historical Museum in partnership with the Willamalane Park and Recreation District/Dorris Ranch and the Lane Education Service District and the Shelton McMurphey Johnson House.
The mission of this project is to encourage students to make personal connections to history through real objects, literature, and other multi-disciplinary ways. Each trunk contains authentic and replicated items, as well as maps, illustrations and photos, all of which teachers and students are encouraged to handle.
The trunk themes are:
- Westward Migration (Oregon Trail & Early Settlement)
- Civil War
- America: A World Power (Late 19th/Early 20th Century U.S. Expansion)
- Shelton McMurphey Johnson House (Early Eugene history)
- World War II: The Oregon Homefront
- Fur Trading at Fort Umpqua
The trunks are large
(33" x 23" x 15") and weigh approximately 55 pounds. A vehicle with a large trunk or compartment will be necessary for transport. Two people should be used to load and unload trunk from a vehicle, it can be wheeled by one person like airport luggage.
